Tank requirements: These fish like to dig so prefer a sandy or fine substrate. With that in mind any rock decor should be secured in place and plants should be secured to rock or wood. They do like rocky caves, so sitting the rock directly on the bottom of the aquarium (or on plastic egg crate) will ensure they can not undermine it when digging. They need good filtration as they are heavy eaters. The filtration should provide adequate water flow while the caves of wood and rock provide some shelter from the current for a rest.
Tank Mates: Not a community fish by any means as they can be very territorial. These fish can happily be kept with other south american cichlids that grow roughly the same size, provided they are introduced as juveniles. Also as they age they will require visual blocks to reduce aggression as well as ensuring they are all very well fed. They do well with large barbs (such as tinfoil or lemon) as well as armoured catfish or big plecs.
