Keeping Marine Boxfish in Marine Aquariums
Marine boxfish are uniquely shaped, slow-moving fish known for their box-like bodies, interesting patterns, and curious personalities. They require specific care and peaceful tank environments to thrive, making them suitable for intermediate to experienced aquarists.
Boxfish prefer stable water conditions with temperatures between 74–80°F and a pH of 8.1–8.4. They need medium to large tanks (at least 75 gallons) with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. Gentle water flow and excellent water quality are important, as boxfish can be sensitive to poor conditions.
Boxfish are omnivores that accept a variety of meaty foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood, along with some algae or vegetable matter. Feeding should be done once or twice daily with a varied diet to ensure balanced nutrition.
Boxfish are generally peaceful but can be shy or stressed if housed with aggressive tankmates. They do best in calm community tanks with non-aggressive fish. Avoid housing with large, aggressive species that may bully or outcompete them for food.
Yellow Boxfish (Ostracion cubicus): The most common species, known for its bright yellow juvenile coloration and cube-like body.
Boxfish produce a toxin called ostracitoxin, which they release when stressed or threatened. While this toxin can be harmful to other tank inhabitants in a confined space, it poses no risk if the fish is kept healthy and stress-free. Proper tank maintenance and gentle handling prevent toxin release, so toxicity is generally nothing to worry about in a well-managed aquarium.
Marine boxfish are fascinating and peaceful additions to marine aquariums, valued for their unique shape and calm demeanor. With stable water conditions, a varied diet, and compatible tankmates, they thrive and bring personality to community tanks without causing problems related to their natural toxicity.
