Size: 25cm (9.8”)
Temp: 20-24°C
PH: 6.5-8.0
Diet: Flake, granules, cichlid pellets and frozen/live/freeze dried foods
These fish can often be sold as blue acara as juveniles, however a dead giveaway is the gold rim on their caudal fins.
Tank requirements: The aquarium should be larger with soft substrate as these fish do like to dig and rearrange their substrate. They prefer lots of hiding areas made from rocky outcrops, drift or bogwood and can have a planted tank with robust plants (java, anubias, amazon swords etc especially when tied to wood or rock, or float). Water movement should not be vigorous, however, filtration and frequent water changes should ensure that the nitrates are kept to a minimum.
Tank mates: These are a notoriously aggressive (and well named!) fish. They will do well with other big robust cichlids, bigger catfish, big plecs or any sizeable barbs (such as tinfoil or lemon barbs). Any small fish will become food and any peaceful small moving fish will be terrorised / killed.
