The Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) is a living fossil — a primitive, eel-like fish with armored scales, lung-like breathing, and a bold personality. Native to African river basins, this species has remained virtually unchanged for over 60 million years, making it a true standout in any aquarium.
With its elongated body, dorsal finlets, and alert expression, the Senegal Bichir adds drama and movement to large tanks. It’s a bottom-dwelling carnivore, often seen cruising the substrate or resting in shaded areas. These fish are hand-selected for size, health, and activity, and are best suited to experienced aquarists or confident intermediates.
Care Guide
Water Parameters
• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: 6.5–7.5
• Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
• Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons (larger preferred)
Senegal Bichirs need stable, warm water and a secure lid, as they’re known escape artists.
Diet
Carnivorous and opportunistic, they thrive on:
• Sinking carnivore pellets
• Frozen foods (bloodworm, shrimp, mussel, whitebait)
• Occasional live foods (earthworms, feeder shrimp)
They’ll eat anything that fits in their mouth — avoid small tank mates.
Tank Setup
• Sand or fine gravel substrate
• Driftwood, rocks, and caves for hiding
• Low lighting or shaded areas
• Gentle flow preferred
They’re nocturnal and appreciate dim environments with structure.
Temperament & Tank Mates
Senegal Bichirs are semi-aggressive and predatory, but not overly territorial. Suitable tank mates include:
• Large peaceful cichlids
• Silver dollars
• Giant danios
• Clown loaches
• Other bichirs (with space)
Avoid small fish, slow swimmers, or anything bite-sized.
