Armoured Shrimp (Atya gabonensis), often called Giant Fan Shrimp, are one of the most unique freshwater invertebrates in the hobby. Instead of claws, they use fan?shaped appendages to filter tiny particles from the water column, creating a gentle, hypnotic feeding motion. Their thick, sculpted exoskeleton gives them a rugged, “armoured” look, with colours shifting from sandy beige to deep blue depending on mood and environment.
These shrimp grow up to 14 cm (5.5”), making them an impressive centrepiece for planted or river?style aquariums.
Armoured Shrimp are completely peaceful and safe with fish, shrimp, and snails. They spend their time perched on wood or rocks, fanning for food in areas of gentle flow. They don’t bother tankmates and can’t pinch or harm anything — they’re gentle giants.
Tank size: 100L+
• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: 6.5–8.0
• Hardness: Up to 20 dGH
• Flow: Moderate to strong (essential for feeding)
• Oxygenation: High
• Décor: Wood, rocks, and elevated perches for feeding positions
A well?oxygenated tank with clean water and steady flow mimics their natural West African river habitat.
As filter feeders, they rely on fine suspended foods. Ideal options include:
• Powdered shrimp foods
• Crushed flakes
• Baby brine shrimp
• Micro?foods and infusoria
They’ll also scavenge, but they can’t compete with fast fish for large food items. Ensuring food drifts through their fans is key to keeping them healthy
