Zodiac loach - Mesonoemachelius Triangularis

The Zodiac Loach is a beautifully patterned brook loach from the fast?flowing hillstreams of southern India. Known for its bold markings, active behaviour, and unique triangular body shape, this species brings movement and character to specialist setups. When kept in the right environment — cool, oxygen?rich water with strong flow — the Zodiac Loach becomes confident, bold, and displays its striking patterning at its best.

Tank Requirements

1. Minimum tank size: 120L+ (32 gal)

2. Temperature: 20–26°C (cooler than standard tropical)

3. Water: Highly oxygenated, clean, fast?flowing

4. Environment: Smooth rocks, pebbles, sand, driftwood, strong current

5. Group size: Single, known pair, or 10+ to reduce territorial behaviour

Diet

• Omnivorous: sinking pellets, algae wafers

• Frozen/live foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp

• Natural foragers that appreciate mixed textures

Behaviour & Compatibility

• Semi?aggressive/territorial with their own species

• Peaceful with other fast?water fish (danios, barbs, garras)

• Avoid tiny, slow, or long?finned tankmates

• Scaleless — sensitive to medications (half?dose rule applies)
