Common Name: Emerald Crab, Green Mithrax Crab
Latin: Mithraculus sculptus
Max Size: 2.5 inches
Temperature: 72-81F
pH: 8.1-8.4
Reef safe: Yes with caution
The Emerald Crab is arguably the most popular species of crab kept within marine tanks. It has a charming personality, patrolling the rock-work for scraps of food. It is mainly sought after for its inherent taste for pesky bubbly algae which may plague saltwater aquaria. Although it is reef safe, if inadequate food is present it may start to pick on coral or on other inverts so ensure regular feedings of meaty foods or flake which reach the bottom of the tank. Emerald crabs are best kept individually to prevent turf wars. Overall a classic marine staple of the reef tank.
