The Pictus Catfish (Pimelodus pictus) is one of the most popular freshwater catfish in the aquarium hobby. Known for their silver bodies, bold black spots, and long flowing whiskers, these energetic little catfish bring constant movement and personality to any tank. They’re peaceful, active, and perfect for community aquariums with the right tankmates.
Tank Size & Layout
Pictus Catfish are fast swimmers and love open space. A 200?litre tank or larger is ideal, especially if you keep a small group. They appreciate:
• Smooth décor (avoid sharp edges)
• Driftwood and caves for hiding
• Dim or soft lighting
• Sandy or fine gravel substrate
They thrive in clean, well?oxygenated water:
• Temperature: 24–28°C
• pH: 6.5–7.5
• Hardness: Soft to moderate
• Flow: Moderate flow is ideal — they enjoy a bit of current
Regular water changes are essential, as they’re sensitive to poor water quality.
Pictus Catfish are opportunistic omnivores. In the wild, they scavenge for insects, worms, and small crustaceans. In the aquarium, they happily accept:
• Sinking pellets
• Catfish wafers
• Frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis)
• Occasional live foods
• High?quality flakes (they’ll pick up what falls)
Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily to match their high activity level.
Pictus Catfish are peaceful but fast — and they will eat anything small enough to fit in their mouth. Ideal tankmates include:
• Larger tetras
• Barbs
• Rainbowfish
• Gouramis
• Peaceful cichlids
• Other medium?sized community fish
Avoid tiny fish like neon tetras or shrimp.
